What is the best way to utilize an Alumni contact while applying for jobs?
I have a list from University Career office, of alumni who works for various firms I am interested in. Without being too obvious, what it the best way to contact them about a job, without actually asking for a job?

- Contact them and ask if they're willing, or if they can recommend someone, who could offer you a mentoring session on building a career in their industry. Most people love to talk about themselves and enjoy helping someone who is just starting out. This is also a good way to build relationships. Trust me, if they know about an opening and think you're sharp, then they will tell you about it. And if they don't have a job for you, then at least you've started to build your professional network-- which as you grow your career, becomes the most important thing. Make sure you ask them, at the conclusion of your mentoring session, who else they would recommend to advise you. Then contact that person and say so-and-so recommended them... and then you're off an running again! Network, network, network... and the jobs will come to you.
- Tell them where you got their name, that you are a fellow alum, you're looking to change careers and are curious about their industry/company. Ask if you could chat with them for a few minutes to pick their brains. In the conversation don't ask for a job, just ask them about their job, career and company, and ask for any advice they'd have for someone entering their career or company. See if they offer anything specific. If you want to be really direct, close with asking who they would recommend contacting within their company to talk about jobs.
